Dian Fossey was a primatologist who undertook extensive research on mountain gorillas and learnt how to make them comfortable in the presence of humans. She founded the Karisoke research center to study them and strived to protect the mountain gorillas from poachers. She did this until her death in 1985. It is thought that if not for her efforts the endangered species, mountain gorillas would be extinct or in very low numbers by now. Though she died her legacy still lives on and it has grown into conservation efforts. The Dian Fossey tomb is located in Volcanoes national park next to her favorite gorilla Digit the silverback’s grave. During the hike you get to learn of Dr Dian’s works at length and you may be lucky enough to encounter some of the mountain gorillas and golden monkeys along the trail.
The hike is not difficult except for the mud you will encounter along the trail and takes about two hours utmost. When you reach the graveyard you will also be awarded by exquisite views of the Virunga mountains and the DR Congo. The hike may also give you time to reflect on your contributions to nature and make you want to fight for something you value like Dian Fossey did. The descending from the Tomb takes 1 to 2 hours.
