Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

From

Overview

In Northern Kenya in Samburu County, popular for housing the big cats, are the Samburu and Shaba Reserves. The Shaba National Reserve has its name from a massive cone of volcanic rock dominating the area. It has a view of dramatic scenery, including the dry grassland dominated by Shaba Hills Volcano, riverside forests, and scattered woodland. The uncrowded area provides an excellent environment to chill out, making a backdrop to the incredible Table Mountain. The one airstrip in Samburu is the Samburu Oryx. There are over 350 bird species that brighten the room. A sparkling oasis is at the western end, and it gave the reserve its name.

The wildlife from all the reserves for survival depend on the Ewaso Nyiro River waters, and most of the species are particularly adapted to these dry conditions. The wildlife comprises Somali ostriches, gerenuks, and Grevy's zebras. The top attractions in reserve are the local watering holes and the Sarara Singing Wells, from where the Samburu warriors come to sing their traditional songs while transporting drinking water for their cattle. The last reward while in the park will be getting a glimpse of the big cats.

On the other side of Ewaso Nyiro River is the Buffalo Springs links to the Samburu Reserve onto the south. It shares much of its wildlife with the park, including the Zebras and the rare crocodile and hippos roaming on the river banks.
