The Congo Nile Trail is a route that has been discovered to be a travel gem and a rare adventure. The trail stretches for 141 miles along the shore of Lake Kivu in Rwanda. Day 1: RUBAVU – CHIMBIRI (4 Days / 3 Nights Congo Nile Trail)

Your Congo Nile Trail Walk starts with a short drive of less than 10km from the Hotel to the Congo Nile Trail starting point through Bralirwa, the oldest brewery in Rwanda. The hiking starts at 08:00 am after a short briefing from one of the most experienced local guides who will quickly give you an overview of the first stage. After this introduction, you will start your steps while enjoying the charming views of the amazing landscapes, including rolling hills and the clear water of Lake Kivu. The hike will end with a short walk with traditional healers from the Indangamuco Association who will reveal to you some of their traditional healing technics and show you the herbs they use. The experience ends with traditional music tools played by that community at Cyimbiri guest house.

Day 2. CHIMBIRI – KINUNU (4 Days / 3 Nights Congo Nile Trail)

Wake up in the morning listening to the songs of the birds and the sound of the soft lake waives at Cyimbiri guest house. Enjoy your breakfast before starting your second stage to Kinunu. Like the previous stage, the footpaths take you very close to the beautiful nature and the amazing people of this western part of Rwanda.

Day 3. KINUNU – MUSASA VALLEY – KARONGI (4 Days / 3 Nights Congo Nile Trail)

Tie your boots comfortably, but not too tight, and start your third day on the Congo Nile Trail. This day will combine both hiking and a boat ride. Starting at 08:00 am with a guide from Ikaze Rwanda tours, who will guide and help you book a boat that will take you from Musasa valley after a two and a half hours hike from Kinunu. The boat will take you to Bethany hotel where you will check-in and wait for the fishermen to come and take you for the night fishing experience at 17:30.

Day 4. KARONGI – MOUNT KARONGI – KIGALI (4 Days / 3 Nights Congo Nile Trail)

As today is your last day on the trail, we would like to drive with you in a 4×4 car on a rough road to the top of Mount Karongi one of the highest peaks in the region. This is about one hour drive from Karongi town. Our driver guide will lead you to the Dushyigikirane sorghum farmers who will take you through the sorghum beer experience from the farm to the calabash. After this fascinating and significant experience, you will drive back to Karongi for lunch before you head back to Kigali.

PLEASE NOTE: Transfer from Kigali (or any other location) to Gisenyi and from Gisenyi to the trail head can be arranged upon request.

It also is not a must for you to start at the beginning of the trail, wherever you start be assured of a magnificent view. The trail map has got the official eight Congo Nile campsites well known in the surrounding area and several guest lodges. Those on a budget might opt for the campsites under the star-filled clear sky and amidst banana plantations. You also get to experience local and international foods, from the lodges along the way, which is quite good.

In addition to the trail, there are more activities that one can indulge in like the coffee and tea excursions in the Pfunda tea plantation and Huye mountain coffee respectively. Also recommended are general market visits, nature walks, beachside naps, and quiet afternoons. Those wanting time off the trail may go for gorilla or chimpanzee trekking in the Volcanoes National park and Nyungwe national park only one hour from Gisenyi and Cyangungu offshore towns respectively.
